Understanding Your BMI

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure that uses your height and weight to work out if your weight is healthy. The BMI calculation divides an adult's weight in kilograms by their height in metres squared.

BMI Categories

Underweight: BMI less than 18.5

Healthy weight: BMI 18.5 to 24.9

Overweight: BMI 25 to 29.9

Obese: BMI 30 or more

Limitations of BMI

BMI is a useful measurement for most people over 18, but it's not perfect. For example, if you have a lot of muscle, you may be classed as overweight or obese despite having low body fat. This is why measuring your waist can give you a better idea of your overall health.

When to Seek Medical Advice

If you're concerned about your weight or BMI result, speak to your GP or practice nurse. They can provide personalized advice and support for managing your weight safely.
